Ok, I haven't written in a very long time and firstly, sorry about that but if you want to know the truth, I was so exhausted that taking time to sit, write, and think would have taken a lot lot out of me. (and yes lot lot is just often, just ask mostly children) So, let's recap, in August I started to get really worn down with the rest of the population down here. Work was still real good and we got to do some really fun things, like Kovak sleds and a trip to Castle Rock when I saw the sun for the first time....It was August 21ish, a day that will live in infamy...I looked at it for so long it burned my eyes a bit. Hurt so good... I tried to find a pic of Meghan, Sal and I jumping in the air at the same time with the sunset in the background, well either way, it was amazing.... So, really Sal left to go to Mexico on Sept 4th, the first flight. It was sad to see him go, I just love that guy. Despite us all working so close to each other for so long I still think that both he and Meghan are amazing and am really glad I got the opportunity to winter with them.....what a good winter it was... Also, on Aug 19th we drove to Pegasus (Andy, Jolene, Meghan, Sal and I). It was the first official sunrise in which the sun disk would rise above the horizon. Yes. You guessed it, it was a beautiful day but I was unable to see the disk as it was hiding behind Mt. Erebus and the fact that it was foggy out...but beautiful nontheless. :) Nacreous clouds: Holy shit, if you haven't seen them, they are f-ing amazing! They look like the inside of a clam shell, the colors are so amazing, like iridescent or as I once lovingly described, a spill of gasoline on the ground...beautiful.......they appeared and stayed in the sky for at least 3 or 4 hours every day for a week. What a wonderful thing to see. :) I loved every minute of it... :) A frame: We went out to the A frame on August 20th evening.....wow that was so much fun! We had a girls night out there, Jolene, Genevieve, Lizzie, Meghan and I all went. It was so so much fun! We drank a bit, mostly hovering over the stove (the only source of heat in the entire building) and only having one lantern to light the entire place...which took some work to get it going. :) It was a great time though. We laughed and walked outside to find a sky full of stars, I mean, more than I have ever seen ever. Since there were no other light sources around we were able to see everything, I have never seen the milkyway so clear, and small and big and millions and millions of stars and to top it off...Auroras.......streaking across the sky in a constant line across the sky. And just our silouettes against the sky. Wow, ok ok I'm rambling a bit, it was amazing though. really amazing. So, anywho that was great fun and sigh... (Lizzie, me, Genevieve, Meghan and of course Jolene is taking the picture... :) ) WOAAG: (Winter Over Alternative Art Gallery) What a wonderful success. :) It was a great fun time at the BFC in which we hung a moble made of hot dogs, had a fountain made out fenises (a spout a woman uses to pee through, it gives you way more control and check it out...you can stand up and still pee. Shah), many collages, slideshows and drawings to boot. It was lovely, and held here at the BFC. (art critics of course) We also had an Appreciation Pizza dinner (at the BFC) which was the best pizza I have had in probably a year (strangely coinciding with how long I have been in Antarctica...hmmm) all thanks to Sal, and of course yoga continued without interruption as well as Tuesday family meals (also all held at the BFC)... and so now you have been caught up in the big events of the last month of winter. Also, anticipation for Sept grew and people started to get freaked out with the idea of new people and freshies (fresh food) and mail...wow. Such a crazy period. During this transition every girlfriend of mine all simultaniously and independently errupted into hysterics and crying, a mystery unbeknownst (sp?) to me, apparently it happens every year, but what a strange experience... :) I'm not saying they all started at the same moment and cried to the moon, I'm saying on about the same day we all became overwhelmed and emotional...crazy. Well, now they are here. They are here and not leaving. I watched the plane fly in from Ob Hill and it was a sight to see....first one I've seen in months months...my heart clutched in my chest and I took an involuntary step back...whoa I thought what is going on here....new guy. Then the galley started roaring with thunder-like footsteps and talking. If you don't know what I mean exactly...the galley is always quiet, if you snort, the whole galley hears it...that is how quiet it is....and now, hundreds of more people are here, taking my seat and forming lines for food and talking loudly...and whoa, it's a lot to take in. I have never felt that way with other humans before, almost scared of them. It was crazy. So that day has passed and I have had to learn to not get upset when the shower is taken, when my seat is sat in, when my coat hook is gone, when my coffee mug is used (ok that hasn't happened yet but when it does...oohhh) and many more things that were normal, everyone knew about and it was a commonplace routine that I had no idea I liked so much. It's bizzare what change has done to me this time. I feel like most times I am adaptable to most situations and get along with most anyone. However this time, my emotions skyrocketed and I would errupt at random times, and they didn't necessarily have to have a cause/effect method. Work is different. There are now 14 people total here in a space that only 3 have been in for 6 months or so. It's a bit crowded. The new people are really great and have some amazing energy which I love to have around and I think they are going to be good for this place. However the days just tick by, hopefully that will change. I feel like I am getting more done each day but at the same time everything is going by so much slower. Let's just say, it's also taking more adjustment. So, I leave in three weeks. I am going to NZ, Tonga and maybe China, and that is what I think of when I get low, exhausted or both. NZ, Tonga, China...NZ, Tonga, China.... So, I hope this has given you some insight to my still changing life and again, sorry for such a lapse. To all at home, I miss you, to all who travel, good luck and I will end this with the worst pic taken this winter, or at least one of the more amusing ones...we thought it so bad that we decided that everyone should know it is in fact from 1989 and we are so much better looking in the present day......... Oh and also I was reprimanded for apparently breaking the Antarctic Treaty or something...details for those of you who ask me later... :) Bona Sera lovely people.........

The sun is coming back so soon, I know you have heard it before, but I can't get over the excitment! How crazy that sheer light can make something so different and important. This weekend is our last 2 day weekend, and I am going to enjoy it like never before... Sorry for such a short message, my sleepy eyes either need excersise or alcohol, I think I will give them both.....to stay awake of course...yar. |

Awareness Letter: As you all know, it is easy to go about our daily lives concerned about our families, friends, jobs, what's on TV that night, plans for the weekend, well, you get the point. (I am as guilty as anyone for this) This letter is to encourage you to let your minds, your hard efforts and your passion to go to other places as well. By looking into alternatives for your mode of living right now, you will be benefiting your family, friends, work center, and even plans for the weekend to make it all that much richer. We are living in a time of change and my belief is that you will see these progressive ideas become everyday realities as time goes on. These are some ways to stem off high gas, and electricity prices, not only to increase your savings account but also to keep your planet clean. My goal is not to burden you with guilt or huge loads of information to process, I simply wanted you to be aware of different modes of life in case you are unaware. A) Gas prices rising, maybe time to look into alternative energy sources for your vehicles. The future is upon us. I have a friend that does this for his diesel car. So, just listen for a few mins to hear about how this fuel is used and made...pretty interesting. I wonder if this is worth it? The only reason I say this is because looking at other sources of energy is practical since we know that gas prices will only go up. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/stor Or maybe look into a hybrid car. I heard good things about the Prius on NPR tonight. Here is a comparison for a Prius hybrid up against other hybrid models and makes...if this doesn't show, just go to the prius website and click "comparison" under the "research" button. Sweet cars... And if for some crazy reason you may just be in the market for buying a car soon, remember about hybrids or biodiesel, it will most likely save you money in the end. http://www.toyota.com/compare/index.htm B) Again, energy prices increasing may lead to a cleaner and more efficient alternative. I can only hope. I listened to a program last night on NPR regarding Solar Energy. I think this would be an amazing way to start a positive change for our futures. It's a little bit long of a program but perfect for sitting and doing mundane office work or the like. :) Please listen, it is so very interesting and there is something you can do to help change take place. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/stor When looking at a permenant settlement of residence or businesses this would come in handy to knock down prices of energy. Yep I'm just getting excited about possible change... yay! So, here's a website to get that going and do some research on solar power. http://findsolar.com/index.php C) And you may have already heard this speech from Gore, and even if you aren't a fan of Gore, hear him out. The changes he is proposing sounds difficult but possible. We are going to have to change our way of life for the future no matter what, our planet just can't support our current lifestyle. So, this speech represents what you might say Americans are holding onto and diving head first into, hoping for some real change, however small. http://www.wecansolveit.org/ D) And finally, let's celebrate being women by the way we treat our bodies! I have purchased this item called the "Keeper" and will get it as soon as the plane flies down here. However there are other brands that have similar designs and basically the same concept. Some benefits that really struck me about having this "Keeper" include the fact that it is made out of organic gum rubber, whereas tampons do not have to go through any testing to ensure that they are in fact clean, and they are usually processed and not organic. I was also struck by the fact that when you think about it, tampons and pads are such a huge environmental waste. You only use them once and throw them away, to add to an already huge landfill pile. Also, it saves the buyer a lot of money. The Keeper lasts 10 years at a cost of $37 with tax and tampons or pads cost about $3-5 a pack, which lasts a maximum of a few months. If you do the math, it is a very inexpensive alternative. I have a few friends down here who rave about theirs and love them so much I just had to buy it and check it out. Also, you can send it back within a certain amount of time if you don't like it. Check it out. It's very exciting! http://www.keeper.com/index.html Also, I am going to be trying a new form of birth control as well. It is called an IUD. I am sure you have heard about it before, but the one I will be getting has NO hormones. I don't know if that is as appealing to you as it is to me, but the idea of being protected and fully being myself is very exciting to me. I am not sure how much it is in the states, and I'm sure it varies with insurances, or out of pocket and state to state as well probably, but I can tell you I heard it is around $500, you would definitely need to look into the price further. Ok, for some of you this is just not practical right now and I only bring this to your attention for the future. However, it lasts up to 10 and sometimes 12 years, so if you break that up into a monthly payment it definitely looks different. So theoretically let's say you use if for all ten years and it costs $500, your monthly payment will be $4. If you only use it for 2 years it is $20 a month. To me that is acceptable for many reasons, having a birth control method that doesn't include hormones in whatever form, not needing to remember a pill at a certain time, I am saving money and whenever I do want to start a family, all I need do is take it out and I will be ready to concieve. There are risks with it the same as any other body altering birth control which you should be aware of, however, from personal accounts I have heard it is worth it. I am still looking into the finer points of it but am definitely putting it at the top of my list. http://www.paragard.com/index.php http://www.plannedparenthood.org/he http://www.paragard.com/custom_images/p http://www.arhp.org/crc/intrauterine.ht Thank you very much for looking at all these ideas. If you feel at all inspired by them or hopeful please pass them on, suggest them to your work centers, talk to the grocer about them, put them on a blog, or if you are able, maybe even act on some of them yourself. Thanks again for your time and I hope you have a wonderful day on this beautiful planet we call Earth. :) Elizabeth Also, just a little shot of what McMurdo looks like this week...the sun is COMING!!! See the sun! This is at Hut Point over looking the Ross Sea. You can see part of the Discovery Hut on the left (where Scott and Shackleton both stayed at different times). It's still mostly dark though...but the sun is a-comin'...Yeepaw! |

WOW, how time does fly by. :) I can't believe it is already July and tomorrow is the Fourth! My goodness me... Well, let's see where did I leave off at? I don't believe I have talked about quite a few very important and interesting events that have taken place from whence I last wrote. Namely the Mid winter events, Mid winter Polar Plunge (brr) and Mid winter Din Din (yum). So, alas, if you recall I have written about a previous "women's only" polar plunge. Well, this one was definitely different. There were men (A), the water somehow wasn't as cold, or maybe that's just how it seemed (B), and there was a hot tube (C). And you might think with all these differences how did it go? Answer, awesome. Having men was sometimes awkward, sometimes not. I really wasn't too awkward about being naked and jumping in the water but I did notice a few situations that made awkward moments...but before I talk about that, I want to say that jumping in this time (factor B) wasn't as bad as the previous time...it seemed warmer? There were actual lights that lit up the hole in the water which was really cool. Also, the hole was even to the jumping platform, so there was no drop of some feet to get to the water making it less to climb out of and really pretty great! The hole was WAY bigger, no one was getting scraped on their ribs and the like. Ahh, and of course I do love the taste of salt water. :) So, the event unfolded as such. I arrived, went to the warm up shack and tried to wait for Meghan and Sal (we were going to imitate Tom Berg, who our building is named after, and he has a picture of him at the Mid Winter Polar Plunge in the 60s making this amazing yelling expression....it was going to be great). So, they arrived later on and I changed and put on my robe and harness, muy importante. I went first out of Meghan and I and walked down to the water. I then looked around, crowded around the hole was about 10 people, all ready with their cameras...pretty strange if you as me...people just waiting for me to be naked...eek. So what could I do? I ripped open my robe and threw it off flasher style. ;) I posed for a few pics and then jumped in! Yay! I then screamed (from being cold, and maybe something about being reborn in the water? maybe not...). Either way, I proceeded to run full speed slipping with my crocks and really not getting my robe on completely, thus flashing the rest of the people outside not around the hole and jumping head long into the hot tube, and here we have our first real awkward moment of realizing that a guy was already in there naked and then quickly retreating to a corner because he was a firefighter, and Will of course is his boss, why that was awkward...can't say completely, oh yah, we were both naked in a hot tube alone...riiight. Anywho, Meghan then quickly did the same thing but had the unfortunate luck of acutally landing on this firefighters leg as she jumped ass first into the water...yikes. We looked at each other and then well, got out. hehe. We got into the hut and yes, I couldn't figure out my robe again, so flashed everyone in there...sorta. We chose a small corner, us women I mean, and tried our best to change back into clothes. Kinda hard to have privacy when a guy is sitting on a chair at crotch level just staring and pretending to put his shoes on for the entire duration of our changing experience, hence creepy/awkward moment number 2. So, after that we got super drunk at the Kiwi bar, had the shotski, I danced the entire night, wisky was poured on the floor, and all of it was caught on tape thanks to our very own Salvatore Consalvi...man those are some funny videos. Meghan and I also tried biting each other's heads...according to the vidoes, but who really believes those things anyways? :) So, all in all, fun filled, action packed, awesome stuffed, joy crammed (?) night. Ok, so I know what you are saying...where's the naked photo? Here's my response, what I like to call the "world wide web" doesn't really treat naked photos of women kindly sometimes... unfortunate, extremely so, because there are some rockin pics of me...well, until this whole "world wide web" thing changes, alas, you will have to be satisfied with a pic of Meghan, Sal and I having fun on that great evening. So, the next great event of importance is the famed Mid Winter Dinner. And famed indeed. Quick history recap, this has been a tradition since the first Antarctic explorers to stay for the winter. And so, anywho, everyone got dolled up and came together for one gormet meal to celebrate the middle of the winter season. And of course there was dancing and drinking involved. Beer or wine only mind you but it was a good time to be had for all. I especially went all out by getting my hair cut by the wonderful and talented Lizzie from Scott Base. It is my favorite hair cut that I have had in YEARS! I LOVE IT! So, yes, it's a pixie/Audrey Hepburn bangs and cutness oozing out of every hair. love love it. :) I also put on a pretty dress and served some hors d'oeuvres which were cute salmon wantons with honey-ginger sauce. Yum. I admit I ate a few...million. Heheh. Will dressed in a gorgeous yellow flowing at the buttons shirt with plaid pants and a maroon shirt...gosh I love that guy. We had a good time and the galley staff outdid themselves with the delicious and amazing food! Yum yum! Afterwards was festivities of dancing and talking. I did get out there and shake my rump of course. Oh and there was a photo area (a lot like prom) and some really awesome pics were taken there....as you can see. :) Other than that, the night went on without a hitch, many danced while a little intoxicated and jovial feelings were felt all around. And of course there was drama... So needless to explain, here are some wonderful, alluring pictures! (Yes I'm going to leave you hanging...hahah *evil laugh* :) ) Ahh, my hair Will and I... purty our yoga group....I think this is the best picture ever! HAHA! everyone together now...awwwwww

Hey so, Genevieve told me long ago that she had worked on a project in my hometown that involved solar pannels and all sorts of stuff rarely seen in Texas. I was SO very excited and she sent me this link to the building that she worked on. It just makes me So happy! I love progressive movements. Esp these kind, I hope this is the future for us. :) Cheers! http://www.hdrinc.com/13/38/1/default.a Be sure to click around in the pdf to see pics...! |

Hey, so all of this awesome stuff is sent out to us on a pretty regular basis, and I just wanted to share a little bit of it with you. :) We see stars 24 hours, so this is what I am seeing everyday, all day. :) a) Alpha Centauri The left of the two pointers that points at the Southern Cross. (The one labled Toliman) It is actually 3 stars in close proximity, that appear as one to the naked eye. It is the 3rd brightest star in the sky Proxima Centauri, one of the three is a is a red dwarf star. It is the closest star to our solar system at just 4.22 light years away. Proxima Centauri is categorized as a flare star, as it undergoes random increases in luminosity because of magnetic activity. It only has about an eighth of our Sun's mass. b) Sirius A lot of people have asked about the bright star that flashes red-white-blue to the north-west in the evenings. (getting ready for the 4th?) It is Sirius, the brightest star in the sky. The reason it flashes is scintillation (atmospheric distortion) you can read about the effect here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scintillat and as a note, it is right beside Ob Hill and I see it blinking red and blue at me every time I walk to the BFC, which is daily. It's such a beautiful sight. :) c) How to find your way in the Southern Hemisphere using the Southern Cross: Alas, in the southern hemisphere we do not have a south star equivalent of the North Star. But you can figure out where south is by using the Southern Cross... In the southern hemisphere the most prominent constellation is Southern Cross. The longer axis of this cross will direct you to an imaginary point in the sky. This point is 5 times the length between the two stars of that axis. A line drawn straight from that “point” to the ground marks South. There's the Star update...enjoy your day wherever it may find you... :) |

Hey so I thought this was interesting, giving the overview of the life in all three US Antarctic Stations...sweet. Oh and p.s. I participated in the climbing lessons and the fitness test. :) I know people at every station and it's super cool to know who they are talking about in the articles and to see what everyone is up to! Yay Antarctica! Cheers. http://antarcticsun.usap.gov/aroundTheC

Greetings. I just had to share the little joys of my day with you. The first was walking to work this morning. On the pitch black morning I walked and noticed as I walked towards the BFC building that OB Hill behind it was lit up. How is that possible, I wondered. Then I glanced to my left to see the oh-so impressive moon radiating across the sky. The light it gave off was so great as to illuminate Ob Hill, the surrounding area and even the mountains across the sound. What was particularly beautiful about this scene was that the moons light was most absorbed by low hanging clouds over the sound in between me and the other side of the sound where all the mountains lay. The clouds looked like they were glowing silver. An absolute dream. The ice on the sea also glowed in certain spots where the snow wasn't as thick to make you wonder where the earth stopped and the sky began. And then you could see a vague outline of darkened shadowed mountains that also added to the bizarre question of where did the sky begin. A beautiful walk to work indeed. The stars were brightly shining as well, through the crystal clear sky. The second joyous moment in my otherwise happy and pleasant day was cooking breakfast this morning. So, this morning I went to the galley before walking to work to grab four eggs, two for me and two for Sal and two pieces of toast, for me. :) When cooking this delightful meal I remembered back to a Christmas long ago spent with my wonderful mother and my dear cousin. My cousin Savanah made us breakfast which was a piece of toast with a hole in the middle where the egg was cooked right in. *sigh* That was a fun Christmas. Well, for some reason I thought of this again. It also happens to be a delicious looking scene in one of my favorite movies V for Vendetta. Anyways, I decided to make this masterpiece and set to work. My first one was...perfect. And the second was slightly burned and also, perfect. I cut into the toast with my fork, making this crackling sound of toast, and have egg yoke running and egg white already there with a buttery finish... wow. That was a great breakfast. I also had orange juice and a kiwi. Oh and a coffee from the French Press that Sal uses every morning. Ahhh, yum. This might have to be a repeated meal. I do believe so. There was a slight controversy over what the dish was actually called...Meghan thought Egyptian Egg, Sal thought Boyscout Egg or something with Basket in it. I have to agree with basket theory, it sounds right somehow. :) The third most joyous moment in my day was watching the weather channel. So, I had a DA duty today and I was in my room a little bit before that just lounging before I had to go. I turned on the news, or BBC, which is SO way better. And this was the moment of ecstasy...the weather came on. I know it sounds strange, but hear me out. The BBC shows not only the weather for one country, no it shows the weather for the world...yes the world. It was such a delight to know that it was raining in Chile and that Saudi Arabia could expect rain tomorrow. It was wonderful to find out that weather was happening. I can't tell you what a joy it will be to experience weather again. Well, lets see, how can I explain this best...to me, I have experience the same weather for the last blank number of months, cold and snow. There has been no rain, cloudiness, flog, hotness, drizzle, etc. There is simply wind, snow and ice here. I enjoy it, but I had almost forgotten how magical weather really is. Just listening to what other people all over the world were experiencing made me so overjoyed. I don't know why really, but just to know that it was happening was enough. I wished I knew someone in Nairobi to tell them that it was going to continue to be hot as shit, or to tell someone in Bulgaria that unexpected showers were coming. It's interesting, but all that I just said is actually true, I remember it all. weird. So if you are in those places, here's an early prediction of weather for you. And those were my joyous moments of note for the day. There were of course other small and large moments of joy to be had, but those were just the unusual ones that I decided were worth sharing with the world. So, I hope you enjoy your day wherever you are and I hope you have some joyous moments of note as well. :) I am going to get back to reading my book "The Portrait of a Lady" now, and see if I can pick any hints up from it. ;)
